ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
Driving an EV is easiest way to cut your personal emissions.
Most of the +450 EV owners on Salt Spring drive them on Salt Spring to reduce their carbon footprint.
We calculate that on Salt Spring, as a fleet, we have reduced our need for fuel by over 300,000 litres of fuel per year. But what really is that ? We have estimated that to be over 8 tanker truck fuel deliveries. That is a reduction of CO2 emissions by about 800 tonnes tCO2e (Tonnes CO2 equivalent). But that does not include the CO2 that is generated by the exploration, drilling, extraction, transportation, refining and then transportation of fuel to the gas station. And that is a "lot" of CO2.
Instead, moisture falls from the sky as gentle rain or fluffy snow, collects in Hydro-Electric Dams, is converted to electricity, and is transferred to your EV by an existing and stable grid. Over 95% of electricity that BC Hydro produces is by this method. My car runs on rain.
