OVERVIEW
There are many reasons why. EV's are easy to drive. And they are:
QUIET. There is no internal combustion noise, exhaust noise or vibration. Bonus - there is no fuel smell.
SPEEDY. Electric cars have instant horsepower, and especially torque. Amaze your neighbours.
VERY FRUGAL. If you compare spending less then $3 on electricity to replace the +$50 you would spend on a tank of gas, the long term benefits are considerable. It starts with inexpensive electricity over gas. Add to that there are way less filters to change, you almost never need a brake job (due to the use of regenerative breaking), there are no bi-annual oil charges, and the cost to operate the vehicle is even lower.
The 2 Degrees Institute has performed a detailed analysis of two automobiles that come in both ICE and EV forms (VW Golf and Kia Soul). Their conclusion for an owner in British Columbia is that the savings over a distance of 250,000 km came to $36,000. This did not include the option of purchasing a used vehicle, which would improve the result considerably. If you are interested, I can send you a copy of the report - Jim at jstanden@ucalgary.ca.
